Established in 2015, the April T. Bocian Foundation honors the memory of April Tayler Bocian, a compassionate young woman from the Pittsburgh area whose life was lost to suicide shortly after her seventeenth birthday. Her family and community transformed profound loss into a lasting commitment to mental health awareness, depression education, and suicide-prevention advocacy. From its roots in Grove City, Pennsylvania, the foundation has grown into an active nonprofit that brings people together through its annual Golf Outing, volunteer involvement, resource sharing, and support for wellness initiatives such as the EmpowHer Retreat. Guided by compassion and April’s legacy, the foundation works to ensure that individuals and families feel less alone while communities gain meaningful ways to create change.
Women’s empowerment is often discussed through five connected areas: social, educational, economic, political, and psychological empowerment. Social empowerment supports equal participation and belonging; education builds knowledge and opportunity; economic empowerment strengthens financial independence; political empowerment supports civic voice; and psychological empowerment builds confidence, agency, resilience, and self-worth. Mental health support can reinforce each area by helping women access care, connection, and coping tools.
