Established in 2015, the April T. Bocian Foundation honors the life of April Tayler Bocian and works to turn profound loss into meaningful action. April was known for her warmth, empathy, and love of basketball, yet she struggled privately with depression and mental illness. Her family and community created the foundation so her story could encourage understanding, connection, and earlier support for others. Today, the foundation advances mental-health awareness and suicide-prevention advocacy through community fundraising, volunteer involvement, resource sharing, and partnerships with organizations including the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and EmpowHer Retreat. Rooted in the values of compassion and community support, the foundation welcomes people who want to remember, learn, help, and create lasting change.
Help girls build confidence by listening without judgment, recognizing effort as well as outcomes, and giving them real opportunities to make choices and develop skills. Supportive peer relationships, healthy routines, and caring adult guidance also matter. Encourage open conversations about emotions and remind them that asking for help is a strength. Programs centered on wellness and connection can provide additional encouragement.
